Speaking on Zimbabwe television, Mugabe assured the ZEC that he "wouldn't get in the way" and that he'd work as hard as he could to ensure votes are properly scrutinized. "The committee only called this recount because I contested some of the results", said Mugabe. "It is only right that I offer my services in return".
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dismissed Mugabe's offer as "disingenuous", accusing the President of attempting to rig the election.
"This is the same man who called for the election to be resolved by a nationwide hand vote" said Tsvangirai. "Now he himself wants to count the original ballot papers? This stinks of corruption".
Mugabe, however, insists that his intentions are for the best and that he wants to see the election carried out fairly.
"I have repeated this on countless occasions. Whether you vote for ZANU PF or you vote for the MDC your vote is treated the same. It's treated as a vote for ZANU PF".
