Former Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell, is
in a critical condition today, after being shot
six times in the head by
police as he boarded a
London Underground train yesterday afternoon.
It was revealed at a police press conference last night that Campbell had been mistaken for a Brazilian electrician, who police had been tracking over previous days.
"We regret that Sir Menzies has become a victim of mistaken identity", said PC John Settsworth.
"We saw him running through Stockwell Station, put two and two together and decided we'd got our man. It was revealed to us later that Sir Menzies was simply in training for the 2012 Olympics."
It is now being discussed whether the issue will be referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
In addition, many have questioned exactly how Sir Menzies was mistaken for a darker skinned Brazilian, and what sort of threat a Brazilian electrician could actually pose to the public in the first place.
