Acting on new legislation which he is currently challenging in the High Court, peaceman Brian Haw performed the citizen's arrest "to protect the security of the country's democratic institutions".
Haw, who has spent the last eight years living in a tent outside Parliament, emerged from his so-called 'peace camp' to inform the police that they were conducting an illegal protest demonstration and would have to disperse. When the police officers failed to comply, Haw performed 24,000 citizen's arrests.
All the officers are now in high-security police stations across the country.
