A student who prides herself on having obtained a vast amount of Facebook friends is being unanimously viewed as desperate by the six that actually like her. Paula Winsthorpe has amassed 278 friends on the social networking site, largely by requesting people she occasionally spoke to at school, at work or at parties.
"There are few people on her list that she actually knows", said long-time friend Janine Cartwright. "It gets really embarrassing when she uses her Facebook popularity to disguise the fact that she's actually quite awkward and difficult in real life".
Says best friend Tracy Moore; "It's not just the friend boosting...what annoys me is when she changes her status to Paula Winsthorpe is really, really fed up. She only does that so we'll ask her why".
"Paula's profile pictures are the most pathetic thing", said Paula's sister Kathryn. "She's always uploading ones of her posing with some vaguely attractive guy. This goes back to her deep routed fear that boys in fact think she's ugly...and generally they do".
Other friends have derided Winsthorpe's personal interest entries, such as favourite films and favourite music.
"It makes me laugh how The Shawshank Redemption is listed as her favourite film when in reality she prefers Legally Blonde 2", said workmate Zoe Small. "And how can Bob Dylan be her favourite singer when her actual album collection comprises of Michael Bolton? She's just trying to be popular".
