Obama takes an insignificant lead over rival John McCain
Supporters of Barack Obama were this week claiming a historic but completely irrelevant victory in the European primary, following the Senator's sweeping overseas charm offensive.
Polls in Germany, France and the UK indicate that voters would overwhelmingly support Obama for the presidency - if they were only eligible to vote in the US election.

In what was being described as a "moral victory", Obama campaigners insisted that the show of support in Europe, while having no bearing whatsoever on the US, was nevertheless an important indictment of the Senator's appeal.

"If we counted Europeans in the vote, Senator Obama would win the presidency by a mile", said one, "which just goes to show that McCain is wasting time and money pressing ahead with an unnecessary election when there's already a clear winner".
