Poseidon, Lord of the Sea, today signalled his intention to push ahead with controversial plans to upgrade his Trident weapon system.

The deity claimed that abandoning Trident would be "unwise and dangerous in the current climate", adding that a three-pronged deterrent system remained necessary. Proponents of the move argue that Trident has proven effective and that a submarine weapon is the most cost-efficient means of ensuring security.

However, anti-Trident campaigners have attacked the plans as reckless, and contrary to Poseidon's disarmament commitments. "Poseidon needs to set an example to other Olympian demigods seeking to acquire these dangerous weapons", said a campaign spokesperson. "To renew a commitment to Trident will send the wrong signal and could precipitate a new nautical arms race for the 21st Century".
