work
Troops from the Royal
Fusiliers regiment in Basra arrived
in Downing Street last night in a
surprise morale boosting visit to the Prime Minister.
In a rousing speech to the Prime Minister, the troops paid respect to the "amazing work of the government under very difficult circumstances" and said that the entire country owed him a "debt of enormous gratitude for your service".
For security reasons the visit had to be shrouded in secrecy until the very last moment, with media correspondents only being told their destination upon landing at London Heathrow.
The troops were taken under escort to meet the Prime Minister at his base in Downing Street which has been under constant attack from an increasingly hostile local population.
During the visit, the troops were shown around Downing Street and met one of the recent casualties of the Prime Minister's administration, a senior boss at HMRC, who was forced to resign last week.
