The war ravaged nation of Iraq is closing in on one of the country's most potentially defining pieces of literature - as government officials and leaders today lent their signatures to the newly drafted Iraqi Declaration of Dependence.
The document, modelled after America's Declaration of Independence, marks a bold new course for Iraq - a country which for many years has threatened to govern itself amid the imposition of democratic elections.
"This country can now stand proud as a nation completely dependent upon other nations", said Iraq's President Jalal Talabani. "No longer will we entertain the idea of Iraq being governed by Iraq. A new era dawns in our history. We can now finally be recognised as a dependent nation of the world".
Several nations have fought long and hard for almost twenty years to bring about Iraqi Dependence, with the United States being chief among those upon whom Iraq will continue to depend. "This is a great day for the people of Iraq and the US armed forces", said US Defence Secretary Robert Gates. "Finally our military presence has paid off and we can continue looking forward to ruling over Iraq for many generations".
However, US President Barack Obama is thought to be lamenting his decision to announce a withdrawal of combat military personnel from Iraq, insisting that he wouldn't have made such a decision had the Declaration of Dependence already have been signed. "If there is one thing that mars Iraq's historic day it is that the people of Iraq will no longer be able to depend on the combat personnel who have made their life a living hell these past 6 years. None-the-less, this is a time for celebration".
