Police in Washington have dramatically arrested 44th US President Barack Obama on suspicion of possessing and abusing marijuana throughout his days at high school in 1978.

The shocking announcement comes after it was initially reported that DC Police had arrested a 47-year-old black man as part of the ongoing clamp down on drug trafficking in the US capital.

According to investigators, the case is being referred to the city of Honolulu in Hawaii, where Mr Obama had attended high school at the time of the alleged incident, but for now the former Illinois Senator is being detained at the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

Superintendent Charles Manning told reporters that his unit have obtained a stream of evidence against Mr Obama, including chapters from his book Dreams from my Father, as well as a November 2007 taping of him casually admitting that he used to "inhale frequently".

"There is a lot of evidence against Mr Obama", said Manning. "We are astounded by how careless he was in leaving such incriminating material lying around for all to see. It's like he wanted to get caught".

Having been granted his standard one phone call, the President is believed to have spoken to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about the possibility of congress wiring $58,000 directly to the police department as an emergency release fee. However, such a bill would have to be passed through congress, which could take upward of four weeks.

Meanwhile, with former presidents George W Bush and Bill Clinton still having avoided jail sentences despite similar admissions of substance abuse, many members of the black community have expressed concerns that Mr Obama's arrest may be a race issue.

"My husband was arrested for one reason and one reason only", said a weeping First Lady Michelle Obama. "He was arrested for being black".

The case continues.
