A study commissioned by Amazon.com has revealed that the widespread introduction of internet shopping among consumers in Iraq could help to reduce marketplace fatalities by as much as 48%.
After presenting the report to the White House, Amazon representatives said "Internet shopping allows consumers to hide their sectarian affiliation and shop in a car-bomb free, family-friendly environment".
Although Amazon is targeting its marketing campaign at ordinary Iraqi consumers, its said there were no current plans to introduce a basic foodstuffs range, while US government officials said that the introduction of electricity and high-speed ADSL broadband to Iraqi households were not a current priority.
Marketplaces are currently the third deadliest places in Iraq, after road sides and RAF Hercules aircraft.
